Car leather fails faster in Colorado than almost anywhere in the country, and most owners don't realize it until the driver's side bolster cracks.
Two reasons. Humidity here runs low — often in the teens or twenties, and in winter, single digits inside a heated car. UV at 5,000 feet is roughly 25 percent more intense than at sea level, and it comes through the glass onto the seats every day the car is parked outside.
Leather is a protein material. It needs a small amount of moisture in its fiber structure to stay flexible. Dry air pulls that out, UV degrades the finish that holds it in, and the seat goes from supple to stiff to cracked. Once it cracks, no product fixes it. That is upholstery work.
What most people get wrong
"Leather needs oil." It doesn't. Modern automotive leather is coated — a pigmented urethane finish over the hide. Oils, waxes and greasy conditioners can't penetrate that finish. They sit on top, attract dust, get slick, and transfer onto your clothes. The genuinely damaging ones are petroleum-based products, which can degrade the finish over time.
Household cleaners. All-purpose cleaner, dish soap and glass cleaner are too alkaline. They strip the protective finish, and once the finish is compromised the leather underneath is exposed and dyes fade.
Baby wipes. Extremely common and not great. Most contain surfactants and alcohol that gradually break down the finish.
Aggressive brushing. The finish is thin. Scrubbing a perforated or embossed seat with a stiff brush wears through it, especially on the seat bolsters that already take the most abrasion from getting in and out.
Leather is not one material
Getting this right requires knowing what you actually have, and it varies a lot.
Coated / pigmented leather — the vast majority of modern cars. Durable, cleanable, needs a water-based cleaner and a conditioner formulated to work with the coating rather than penetrate it.
Nappa and semi-aniline — softer, more lightly finished, common in luxury vehicles. More absorbent, stains more easily, needs gentler handling and lower-pH product.
Perforated leather — very common on ventilated and heated seats. The holes are the problem. Cleaner runs into them and down into the foam, where it can't evaporate and grows mildew. Compressed air pushes debris in rather than out. These need controlled product volume and careful extraction.
Alcantara and suede inserts — not leather at all. Conditioner will ruin them. They need a completely different process, and they are common on performance seats and steering wheels.
Vinyl and leatherette — many "leather" seats are synthetic. They do not need conditioning in the same way, and identifying them correctly avoids wasting your money on treatment that does nothing.

How often, realistically
In Colorado, every three to four months is reasonable for a daily driver parked outside. That is more often than the every-six-months advice you will read from national sources, and the reason is the humidity and UV numbers above.
If the car lives in a garage, twice a year is fine. If it sits outside all summer with light interior leather, more often.
Sunscreen is worth a specific mention. It is chemically aggressive on leather finishes and it transfers heavily from hands, arms and legs onto the steering wheel, shifter and seat bolsters. In a Colorado summer this is a real cause of premature finish failure, and it is why steering wheels wear out before the seats do.
Window tint is part of the answer
If leather longevity matters to you, UV-blocking window film does more to protect it than any conditioner. It reduces the primary degradation mechanism instead of treating the symptom. Worth considering alongside the conditioning schedule.
How we do it
Assess and identify — type, finish condition, and where the wear is.
pH-appropriate cleaning. A dedicated leather cleaner worked with a soft brush to lift dirt and body oils out of the grain texture, then removed rather than left to dry in.
The seams and the perforations. This is where the dirt actually lives. Along piping, in the stitch channels, and in perforation holes. It takes time and it is the difference between a seat that looks clean and one that is clean.
The high-wear areas get real attention. The driver's outer bolster takes the most abrasion of any surface in your car. The steering wheel absorbs hand oils and sunscreen and is usually the most degraded leather in the vehicle. Door armrests and the center console lid are next.
Water-based conditioner with UV protection. Non-greasy, matte finish, restores flexibility without leaving a slick surface. The UV inhibitor matters more here than in most climates.
Realistic assessment. We will tell you what conditioning will and won't fix. Dryness and stiffness improve. Surface soiling comes out. Dye transfer from denim often comes out. Cracks, tears, worn-through finish and heavy creasing do not — those need leather repair or reupholstery, and we will say so rather than sell you a treatment that won't help.
