Mag Chloride & Winter Salt Removal in Fort Collins, CO

If you drive I-25, Highway 287, or anything into the mountains between October and April, your vehicle is carrying magnesium chloride. CDOT sprays it as a liquid anti-icer before storms, and it is the single most damaging thing your vehicle is exposed to in Colorado.

Most people know it as "that white film." The film is the visible part. The problem is what it is doing underneath.

Why mag chloride is worse than rock salt

Rock salt needs moisture to activate. Once the road dries, it mostly stops working — on the ice and on your truck.

Magnesium chloride is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it. That is exactly why CDOT uses it: it stays active on the road for days. It is also why it is so hard on vehicles. A mag chloride residue sitting in a frame rail seam stays damp in dry January air, which means the corrosion reaction never stops. Your truck can be sitting in a dry garage and still be actively corroding.

It is also sprayed as a brine, so it goes on wet and gets everywhere — up into wheel wells, along frame rails, into pinch welds, over the top of the rear axle, into suspension pockets, and onto the back sides of body panels through drain holes.

What it actually attacks

  • Brake and fuel lines. Steel lines running along the frame are the most serious concern. Corroded brake line failure is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

  • Frame rails and crossmembers. Especially inside the boxed sections where residue collects and never dries.

  • Suspension and steering components. Control arm pockets, sway bar mounts, spring perches.

  • Exhaust hangers and heat shields. Cheap to fail, annoying to replace.

  • Electrical connectors and grounds. Mag chloride wicks into connector bodies and causes intermittent faults that are miserable to diagnose.

  • Aluminum. Modern vehicles use aluminum for subframes, suspension knuckles and body panels. Chloride attack on aluminum produces white powdery corrosion and pitting.

  • Paint and trim. The road film holds contaminants against the clear coat and etches over a season.

Why a drive-through wash doesn't fix it

How we do it

A real undercarriage flush. We get under the vehicle with directed high-volume rinse, working wheel wells, frame rails, axle tubes, suspension pockets, and the areas above and behind components that a fixed sprayer never sees.

Salt-neutralizing treatment. A dedicated chloride-neutralizing product applied to the undercarriage and wheel wells breaks the bond between residue and metal, then gets flushed. This is the step that separates the service from a rinse.

Seams, jambs and drains. Rocker panel drains, door jambs, tailgate seams, and the bed rail lip on trucks all trap brine. We clean them and make sure drains are open.

Wheels, wheel wells and brake components. Chloride collects behind wheels heavily. Wheels come clean and the wells get treated.

Paint decontamination. Road film and embedded contaminants come off the paint so the winter's exposure isn't left sitting on your clear coat until spring.

Automatic wash undercarriage sprayers are low pressure, fixed position, and aimed straight up. They rinse the flat, exposed bottom surfaces — the parts you can already see. They do not reach up into wheel wells, over axles, into frame rail cavities, or behind splash shields, which is precisely where the residue collects and stays wet.

Worse, plain water alone is only partly effective. Chloride is highly soluble, so rinsing does help, but residue trapped in seams and cavities needs volume, pressure from the right angles, and a chemical that neutralizes and lifts salt rather than just diluting it.

When to do it

Mid-winter, at least once. Waiting until April means five months of continuous corrosion. If you drive the mountain corridors regularly, more often.

A full spring treatment. Once the spraying season ends, get everything off, then assess the paint. Spring is also when we recommend paint correction and a ceramic coating if you want to stop this cycle from etching your finish every year.

Before storing anything. A vehicle put away for the season with mag chloride on it comes out significantly worse.

Mountain drivers get the heaviest exposure — the passes get sprayed aggressively, and the temperature swings between the summit and the Front Range keep everything wet.
